Metrolinx ‘Transit in Your Community’ (TIYC) is an interactive classroom initiative where students learn about public transportation and community building through discussion and hands-on activities. With the goal to inform and engage schools across Peel Region, the Hurontario LRT Community Relations (CR) team started reaching out to Principals and teachers in late 2018. The uptake has been incredible. The Hurontario LRT team has scheduled 26 presentations for grade five classes in nine schools for February and March.
The initiative was developed and established by the Eglinton Crosstown CR team in 2016. Teachers from the Toronto District School (TDSB) and Crosstown CR team diligently worked to create this hands-on program which aligned with grades 5 and 10 curriculums. Grade 5 students explore community building through transit as it aligns with their social studies curriculum. The grade 10 program focuses on careers in this type of project including opportunities in the construction trades.
This successful partnership with TDSB paved the way for Finch West CR team to connect and present at public and catholic schools. Since May 2018, Finch West team has led five presentations to 450 students. The Hamilton LRT CR team started their school outreach in spring 2018 and launched school presentations in fall 2018. To date, Hamilton team has made 20 presentations at 15 schools to 585 students.
‘Transit in Your Community’ has a positive impact and has been well received by elementary and secondary students and their teachers across school boards” said Judy Brooks, Metrolinx Community Benefits Specialist who was instrumental in building the program. “Teachers and students have embraced these real world examples of how governments work together to the LRT project” said Brooks.
… and, kids love trains.
